Maracatu de Baque Virado: A Living & Changing History (Part 1) (July 17, 2011)

Maracatu_2 I'm very excited about sharing this event with everyone.  As many of you already know I have been studying, researching and playing maracatu for over 10 years.  I'm finally in the process of finishing a book about Maracatu de Baque Virado with the help of my wife Michele Nascimento and good friend Aaron Shafer-Haiss.  The book will be done soon (hopefully!).  But in the meantime Michele and I are sharing some bits of hostorical information that we have discovered along our journey.  We feel that this hostorical information is very important for us to share with the public because Maracatu has been misrepresented for many years.  One example is the agogo bell - Guerra Peixe wrote about the use of the agogo bell in traditional maracatu groups however there is not a single maracatu group in existence today that uses this bell.  So there's only 2 things that could be in my opinion: 1) Guerra Peixe was totally wrong or 2) The traditions have changed since he wrote his book and the bell is not used today but was used then.    You get the idea...come down to this class if you're in NYC and if not, you will be able to purchase the book very soon!
